UN-RIVALLED WEEKEND FOR UNBRIDLED

It was certainly a good weekend for Unbridled as his sons, Empire Maker and Spanish Steps, and grand-son, Rockport Harbor, as they all sired Gr 3 winners over the weekend in North America.

Saturday’s card at Gulfstream Park saw Empire Maker’s son, Soaring Empire, win his second stakes race when winning the Hal's Hope Handicap (Gr 3), over a mile having won a Listed stakes in November last year. Soaring Empire’s latest win was certainly a timely win for his sire’s new owners, Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association's Shizunai Stallion Station, who purchased the sire for the 2011 breeding season. The Juddmonte home-bred, who is out of the blue hen, Toussaud (dam of also Chester House (Gr 1) etc ), proved to be an outstanding three-year-old winning the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1), Wood Memorial Stakes (Gr 1) and Florida Derby (Gr 1). Sadly since retiring to stud in 2004 (as a four-year-old) he has only produced 16 stakes winner, however a quarter were Gr 1 winners! Soaring Empire is out of winning AP Indy daughter, Flying Passage, who is out of the Ashland Stakes (Gr 1) winner Chic Shirine (Mr Prospector). The cross that Soaring Free has been bred has certainly benefited Empire Maker as he has sired two other stakes winners on the cross which include Charity Belle (Gr 3), who is out of a AP Indy daughter, and Clear Sailing (L), who out of a mare by Old Trieste, while also producing Country Star (Gr 1) from another Seattle Slew line daughter. The pedigree pattern of Soaring Empire also produces line-breeding to the Mr Prospector/Dr Fager cross which both Fappiano and Chic Shirine bred on.

Darley’s young sire, Rockport Harbor (Unbridled Song) sired his first Gr 3 winner on Sunday at Santa Anita, when his previous Listed winner May Day Rose stepped up to win the Santa Ysabel Stakes (Gr 3) at . Rockport Harbor, who had his first runners in last year, was a Gr 2 winner having won the Remsen Stakes as juvenile. Having retired at a stud fee of $20,000 in 2007, Rockport Harbor start the 2010 racing season with 118 named foals of which, to date, 20 are winner (2 SW’s), to leave him currently seventh on the first season sire table in North America. This $220,000 breeze-up graduate, who is from the family of Roza Robata (Gr 3), is out of the Pine Bluff (Danzig) mare. The cross with the Danzig line has in fact given Rockport Harbor both his stakes winners as he also sired Bear’s Future out to a Belong To me (Danzig) daughter. the success of this cross is hardly suprising as the Unbrided/Danzig cross has produced 18 stakes winners which also includes Gr 1 winners Acoma (Empire Maker) and Eddington (Unbridled).

Finally, Spanish Steps (Unbridled) sired Little Mike to become his second lifetime stakes winner when winning the Ft Lauderdale Stakes (Gr 3) on Gulfstream Park’s Sunday card. Spanish Steps stands at Foot Fall Farm in Indiana, sired Little Mike out of a Wavering Monarch daughter. What is interesting that only one stakes winner has been sired on this cross which is the 2003 Matron Stakes (Gr 1) winner, Marylebone, who is by Spanish Steps own-brother, Unbridled Song. CWC
